Contrast Mirrors - Interior Design Trend 2020

When the new year arrives, it is always time to cast a thought towards what the freshest and most exciting styles in home decor are going to be in the next 12 months. We have had a think ourselves about this key question, and one of our interior design trends for mirrors in 2020 that we will be keeping an eye on is contrast. This is a strong look not only in the home, but also in commercial spaces - you don't need to do too much with this interior design approach for it to make a significant impact!

There is nothing like some clean, clear and crisp lines of distinction to mark out a new year's style. The freshness of contrasting colours is something which we feel may never go out of fashion. The shapes that arise out of these contrast mirrors can cut through with a striking appearance, whilst not overpowering the overall ambience of a room. We think, though, that 2020 is the time that this should be fully embraced in the world of contrasting mirrors.

Mirrors already, due to the nature of their design, present difference on a wall. They stand out whilst they also bespeak calmness and elegance (as well as having practical uses too). 2020 is also seeing trends for unusual shapes, abstract forms and geomtric styles. What better way to take hold of this potential than to use contrasting colours in a room to highlight the ice-sharp clarity that a mirror can represent?

What is a Contrast Mirror?

Contrast is key element often utilised in interior design. It is how, for example, you may think about colour schemes in general, with contrasting colours working off each other to create shapes and to cultivate a dynamic feel. Contrast mirrors apply this thinking to the colour of the mirror in relation to the surrounding area or even in relation to itself. You can use a contrasting theme to create a powerful look or an impressive eye-catching feature in a room - making your mirror a statement piece!

Making a Statement - Contrasting Monochrome Look

How about monochrome for some fabulous contrast in your next design project? It is a simple idea, but one which has a bold and arresting effect. A great way to use a monochrome theme is by placing a mirror with a black design on a white, off-white or cream coloured wall. This will give you that clear contrast and therefore the mirror will take on an enhanced, eye-catching kind of style. Even if the mirror is smaller, and even if its design is understated, you will be able to play the black off the white to lend the mirror in question a captivating quality in its vivid simplicity.

As mentioned above, then, a mirror that is framed or surrounded with a black design will be one that would work very well to carry out this look. Consider for example the Black Box mirror design by Deknudt, or their gorgeous Oval Black Glass mirror. For a peaceful, almost zen-like option, the Frameless Cord Black Mirror would be a great design. On the other hand, black doesn't have to be purely meditative, and there are some playful, funkier options too, such as the Deep Box Pebble Effect Black Wall Mirror.

Although black style mirrors on a white background are probably going to be the most common way of achieving this contrast, there is of course a second method. This is by placing a white style mirror on a black background. Because black walls are not as common, this might be a rarer style, but we think that it might be all the more reason to be bold and go for it. If purer black is not your thing, then you can create just as striking a contrast with a dark hue such as grey or darker blue, with a white mirror cutting a shape in front of it.

We have some gorgeous white mirror designs here too, such as the exquisitely sculptural Precious White mirror from Deknudt. There are also some chic, retro styles to consider, as represented for example by the Rack White Square Shelf Mirror. Larger white mirrors might also work really well for those more open areas of dark wall. Take a look for example at the Edvard Large White from Denudt for inspiration.
